ILO Mission Visits Turkey After Soma Accident

SOMA_ILO MISSIONLed by Rie Vejs Kjeldgaard, Deputy Director of International Labour Organization (ILO) Regional Office for Europe and Central Asia, and with the participation of ILO experts Martin Hahn and Karen Curtis, an ILO delegation paid a visit to Turkey on May 21-23, 2014, to extend ILO’s sympathy and to offer ILO’s technical support following the mining disaster in Soma on May 13, 2014.

The mission held consultations with labour and employers’ unions as well as representatives from the Ministry of Labour and Social Security to understand their priorities for what should be done in the future to avoid such tragedies.

The mission reiterated its sympathy and support to its constituents and the workers who suffered from the accident in Soma during meetings and expressed its readiness for future collaboration if the ILO is requested to extend its technical expertise.
