The Project “Gender Equality in Political Leadership and Participation in Turkey” works towards increasing women’s political participation and leadership by focusing on the Parliament as a model institution that is uniquely placed to drive changes. Within this perspective key gender equality concepts, international conventions, and the findings of the legistation reviews conducted in the first phase of the Project were shared with the MPs and legislative experts of the Committee on Equality of Opportunity for Women and Men (EOC) of Turkish Grand National Assembly (TGNA).
During the first phase of the Project, Prof. Dr. Bertil Emrah Oder and Dr. Zeynep Oya Usal Kanzler conducted an analysis of a series of legislations from the perspective of its compliance with relevant global legally binding standards on gender equality and empowerment of women to which Turkey is a party. As part of these reviews, legislation review reports which identify the gaps in the current legislations and propose law amendments in the relevant legislations were prepared.
United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women) held the “Meeting on Gender Equality Concepts, and the Presentation of Gender Review of Legislations” with the Committee on Equality of Opportunity for Women and Men (EOC) and legislative experts in Kocaeli on January 30-31, 2016. Furthermore, Ms. Hülya Koçyiğit participated in the meeting to highlight the importance of women’s participation into decision making mechanisms. “Women’s voice echoing ‘I want women to make decisions for me’ should be heard” said the inspiring actress Ms. Hülya Koçyiğit during the Meeting. Also former Minister of Tourism and State and first Chairperson of EOC Ms. Güldal Akşit also attended the Meeting.
The meeting was served as a platform to present the key gender equality concepts, international conventions, and to share the findings of the legistation reviews conducted in the first phase of the Project. The meeting was also served as a preparatory meeting for identification of legislations of priority (2–3 legislations) and presentation of the legislation amendments to these identified legislations.
At the end of the meeting, all participants agreed that previous reports on legislation reviews will be updated and concrete proposals will be prepared as taking into consideration the inputs of the participants and legislative amendments will be taken into consideration, as well.
As a follow up, “Meeting on Gender Equality Concepts, International Conventions and the
Presentation of Gender Review of Legislations” was also organized for the experts of Prime Ministry and line Ministries who are responsible for the legislation reviews, staff of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TGNA) Laws and Resolutions Directorate. The meeting was took place in Ankara on February 2, 2016.
