From students to University alumni associations, private sector companies to civil society organizations, UN Women’s global solidarity movement HeForShe gathers support from many in Turkey who would like to support gender equality and women’s empowerment. HeForShe kicked off in Turkey on March 4th, with the participation of the government, private sector, civil society, academics and the media.
UN Women staff have delivered speeches and held workshops under the campaign umbrella about gender equality and the role of men and boys in taking action against gender discrimination and violence for a more equal and just world. Turkish Society for Quality (KalDer), TurkishWIN, Women Enterpreneurs Association of Turkey (Kagider), Bilgi University and Bogazici University Alumni Associations and the Model United Nations teams of Izmir Gelişim College and the German High School are among many that support the campaign across Turkey. The students of Adnan Menderes University shot a video in support of the campaign which can be viewed here.
The Private Sector also showed great interest in the campaign. UN Women announced bold commitments to gender equality by its global HeForShe IMPACT champions, including Turkey’s largest industrial conglomarate Koc Holding.
Moreover, the Turkish branch of Unilever – another IMPACT champion – has signed the Women’s Empowerment Principles (WEPs), becoming the 49th company in the country that commit to the empowerment of women in the work place. Mehmet Altınok, the CEO of Unilever in Turkey, made a clear commitment that the company will make its internal monitoring via the WEPs. The company also launched the HeForShe campaign internally with the CEO and members of the Executive Board signing the HeForShe commitment and assuring their employees of a more equal work place in the years to come.
