The official opening ceremony of the Legal Clinic operated in Şanlıurfa in collaboration with the Union of Turkish Bar Associations (UTBA) took place with the participation of the Head of Şanlıurfa Bar Association, Mr. Ahmet Tüysüz, the Chief Public Prosecutor of Şanlıurfa Mr. Tolgahan Öztoprak, the President of the Union of Turkish Bar Associations Mr. Metin Feyzioğlu and UNHCR Turkey Representative, Ms. Katharina Lumpp.
In her opening speech, UNHCR Turkey Representative mentioned that the Şanlıurfa Legal Clinic is a great example of joint efforts of UTBA and UNHCR to provide legal assistance to refugees and asylum-seekers in Turkey. Lumpp said “Guidance and advice provided through the Legal Clinic constitute an essential component of the refugee protection response”.
In addition to the legal assistance provided to asylum-seekers and refugees, the clinic provides technical support to lawyers and other relevant governmental and non-governmental actors on refugee law and legal issues faced by refugees and asylum-seekers. All services are provided by professional lawyers with interpreter support when needed and are free of charge. This intervention is made possible through the generous funding of UNHCR’s donors, including the EU Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (ECHO).
