The second event on ‘“Easy, Healthy and Nutritious Meals for Syrian Refugees and Host Communities”’ took place at Şanlıurfa on 7 March 2019. The event was a part of the “Resilience Building via Increased Livelihoods Opportunities and Strengthened Social Cohesion for Syrian Refugees and Host Communities” project that is jointly implemented by Provincial Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry of Şanlıurfa, Şanlıurfa Metropolitan Municipality and FAO and funded by the Government of Japan.
The project aims to develop the basic life skills of the Syrian refugees and Turkish citizens by providing vocational trainings in agriculture sector and health nutrition. It is also expected that the trainings will increase the self-esteem of the beneficiaries and provide additional benefits for families economies and raise the social living standards.
In the event, together with the participants, the very world-renowned famous chef David Hertz and chef Ebru Baybara Demir cooked ‘içli köfte (stuffed meatballs)’ and ‘tabulleh salad’ which are culturally known meals of Turkey and Syria, in addition to being healthy and nutritious and be easily cooked with cheap materials sold at local markets. During the event, the participants learned how to prepare the recipes of these two healthy dishes and received their certificates by the end of the day.
