On the occasion of the #WorldRefugeeDay, 20 June, in order to mark the courage and resilience of those who are forcibly displaced, UNHCR held several activities involving refugees and host communities throughout Turkey.
As part of these activities, a concert was held in Istanbul where music bands Sattas, Country for Syria, Yolda and Mood Band performed songs from Turkey, Syria and all around the world. Music is a beautiful expression of diversity and marking the #WorldRefugeeDay with the performances by Turkish and refugee bands was truly exceptional.
Before the music performances UNHCR Turkey Representative, the Representative from the Istanbul Provincial Directorate of Migration Management and two representatives of the refugee youth delivered welcoming remarks. İstanbul Kültür Sanat Vakfı, reflect and UNHCR’s partners Habitat Derneği, HRDF, ASAM and KADAV provided support for the organization of the event. Some 300 people from different backgrounds including refugees from different nationalities, members of the host and international community, NGOs, UNHCR’s partners and Turkish authorities participated the event.
UNHCR Turkey Representative Katharina Lumpp, in her welcoming remarks, reiterated UNHCR’s gratitude for the hospitality of Turkey and its people and underlined that this generosity is difficult to measure in numbers and deserves our respect and support. Katharina Lumpp also stated that “Helping refugees to rebuild their lives needs all of us to work together so that refugees can achieve what for many of us is given: a safe place to live and being part again of a community – like tonight, enjoying the music, together”
