Walk for Sustainable Development Goals to mark the 73rd anniversary of the United Nations

DSC_7030 copyTurkish officials, diplomats, representatives of the United Nations agencies, academicians, NGOs and many more gathered at Lake Eymir on 6 October to mark the 73rd anniversary of the United Nations, at a joint event by UN System in Turkey and the Middle East Technical University.

Opening the event hosted by Middle East Technical University Prof. Dr. Mustafa Verşan Kök, President of the university stated how glad they are to host the Sustainable Development Goals walk. Lake Eymir is a very well preserved area in Ankara said Prof. Kök. Prof. Kök emphasized that as METU they support the SDGs.

“It is a pleasure to celebrate the 73rd anniversary of the establishment of the United Nations in nature with a Sustainable Development Goals walk. This is also a peace walk, between people and nature” said Irena Vojáčková-Sollorano, United Nations Resident Coordinator at her opening speech.

UN will continue to stand behind the principles it was established for 73 years ago emphasized Sollorano.

Mustafa Osman Turan, Deputy Director General of Multilateral Economic Affairs at Ministry of Foreign Affairs also made a speech during the event and said Turkey played a very important role in identification of the Goals and was one of the first countries to report on implementation of them in 2016.

SDGs provides a very important platform to the World in overcoming the problems and to act together said Turan.

“These goals are not only for governments, they are for everyone who feels like a World citizen” stated Turan.

Following the speeches the SDG walk started. On the walking route three tents with themes of biospshere, society and economy was put up and the participants had the chance to learn about what the SDGs mean globally and what the UN Agencies do to promote them.

Tents remained open for the weekend and volunteering UN personnel informed visitors of Eymir Lake on SDGs.
