The World Food Day (WFD) was celebrated on 16 October in different cities of Turkey with partner agencies, government institutions, civil society representatives and students. The main event was organized in Ankara by FAO with the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock of Republic of Turkey (MFAL) and the Turkish Union of Agricultural Chambers (TZOB). Dr. Ahmet Eşref Fakıbaba, Minister of Food, Agriculture and Livestock of Republic of Turkey, Yuriko Shoji, Representative of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in Turkey, and Semsi Bayraktar, General Director of TZOB made the opening speeches. This year’s theme was “Change the future of migration”: invest in food security and rural development. The programme consisted of the World Food Day Award Ceremony and a panel on “Migration, food security, rural development”.
In addition, the WFD day was with a concert organized together with the Yenimahalle Municipality and Research Center on Asylum and Migration (IGAM). A polyphonic choir comprised of 35 young Turks from the State Polyphonic Youth Choir and 35 young Syrian and Iraqi refugees who have sought asylum due to conflict in their home countries and enjoyed international or temporary protection status in Turkey. FAO also organized WFD Horse Race and various outdoor activities including a food stands in Ankara.
